UNTITLED: FLAG PIECES #022 AND UP
SZE LIN PANG

The aftermath of September 11th is a bittersweet opportunity to reevaluate what constitutes patriotism to the USA. Given that 30% of New Yorkers are foreign born, there is a percolating discomfort with the rise of Xenophobia after 9/11. Nationality is seldom a conscious decision and so its trappings appear disinterested, abstract, impervious to interpretation. This project seeks to engage the nationalist rhetoric surrounding the events of September 11th by rendering transparent it’s most politically and emotionally opaque symbol : The Flag. Handheld flags made of completely transparent materials will be available free to the general public through surreptitious placement [L
