WELCOME TO THE FREE BIENNIAL

Over 200 artists will be participating in free public art projects of all kinds throughout the month of April, 2002 in the greater New York area.

The Free Biennial has no official space or venue except the public space of New York. Events and projects are taking place all over the city, in parks, on sidewalks, in apartments, studios and galleries, as well as through the broadcast airwaves, telephone and mail systems and on the internet.


UPDATE: MAY 1, 2002

Though the Free Biennial is officially over, this site will remain, both as a catalog and as an access point to the many works still available online.

ARTISTS please see the open call to artists to enter FREE MANIFESTA, which will be held in Frankfurt, Germany from May 24 - August 25, 2002.

Swoon & the April 18th Collective, NOPLACE:outdoor gallery, street party, this thurs night, april 18th: painting, sculpture, performance, fire spinning, percussion, live radio broadcast with shadetek, dj domu, and free 103 musicians, bring your radios and boomboxes and tune in to 91.9, because we will be the sound system! party starts at dusk, so meet at 7:30 in the carrol street subway station, manhattan-bound F platform, be on time because we will move from there, and don't forget you dancing shoes!

Friday, APRIL 19

Coralee Lynn Rose, curator, RAW DESIRE, a project mating the installation artwork with the group exhibition. Opening reception, 6-11 PM, Hunter College, 450 west 41 street between 9th and 10th aves, fourth floor #414.

Saturday, APRIL 20

Demaris Ann Howe, Kate Cusack, & Kendra Curry, AMBUSH, Street performance 11AM, 1PM, 3PM at the Greenmarket, Union Square Park (each performance lasts approximately 45 minutes).

Jennifer Liese, TOUR, a hunt for works in the Free Biennial around the city. Meet at noon under the statue of General William Tecumseh Sherman in the Plaza at the southeast corner of Central Park.

Will Pappenheimer & Gregory Ulmer SOFT WISHING Y MONUMENT, This project proposes to trace the form a wishbone or Y shape on designated streets in lower Manhattan. Lines/markers will be made from sequentially placed small pom poms following ledges, cracks, etc. The resulting formation, if only for a few moments, will suggest both the why and wish dilemmas of the September 11th destruction of the World Trade Centers. Starting the morning of the 20th.

Sunday, APRIL 21

Ellen Harvey, CHALK CARPET, a chalk pavement drawing of a carpet and it will take place (weather permitting) on Sunday April 21th on Bedford Avenue at North 7th Street -- next to the Bedford Ave. Subway station.

TWITCH VISUAL - reflective movement in the video context, curated by Kimberly Mora, with installation by Dee Dee Cheriel, interactive video by Chris Musgrave, and additional video screenings by Katerina Karoussos from Greece, and Rostopasca collective (Mona Vatamanu, Nicolae Comanescu and Floe Tudor) and duo Mihaela Kavdanska & Dilmana Iordanova all from Romania , April 21, 8PM-11PM, Remote Lounge 327 Bowery, between 2nd and 3rd Streets.

Jennifer Sharpe, SHARPEWORLD PIRATE RADIO BROADCAST, pirate radio as installation in the region around Tompkins Square Park, 99.9 ON YOUR FM DAIL. Wednesday the 17th at 10pm, and then again on sunday, the 21st at 10pm. The broadcast will also stream from the www.sharpeworld.com, starting April 17th at 10pm.

Bec Stupak, PORTAL WINDOWS: A VIEW INTO ANOTHER WORLD, Video projections of other worlds opening briefly on the sidewalk on the west side of Broadway between Houston & Bleeker. Midnight - 4AM.
